30th and 31st International Labour Process Conferences:
Work Matters – 2012 and 2013
The ILPC is one of the longest established and best known forums for analysis of all aspects of work and employment. It has seen significant growth in recent years, drawing more diverse and inclusive audiences, who strongly concerned to explore work and employment relations in the context of the broader political economy, with a continuing emphasis on employee perspectives and theory-led empirical research. Following highly successful conferences in Dublin 2008 and Edinburgh 2009 the ILPC moved out of Europe and to North America – hosted at Rutgers University – for the first time in 2010.
During its 29 year history the ILPC has earned a reputation as a cornerstone of empirical research and cutting edge theoretical debate. Every year, the conference brings together academics and policy makers from the sociology of work and employment, business and management studies, human resource management, industrial relations, organisational analysis and a range of other disciplines to discuss and critically assess developments in the field. Noted publications have included edited collections on Workplaces of the Future, Global Trends in Flexible Labour; Customer Service; The Skills that Matter; Work Less – Live More? Critical Analysis of the Work-Life Boundary; Creative Labour; Work Matters: Critical Reflections on Contemporary Work and Working Life: Renewing Labour Process Analysis.
Bidding teams will be responsible, with the Steering Group, for the academic aspects of the conference as well as the logistical ones so it is important that teams include researchers familiar with the conference. We will also be looking to continue our successful strategy of moving the conference between the UK, mainland Europe and North America. Accordingly, given the UK venue for 2011, bids from mainland European venues will be advantaged for the 2012 Conference and those from North America will be advantaged for the 2013 Conference.
Teams are invited to submit details of potential venue (including information on accommodation, location of sessions and transport links), preliminary costing, conference organising expertise (including previous knowledge of and connections to ILPC), and institutional support. Further details are a matter of discussion with the Steering Group, but bids may also choose to signal proposals for special events or streams, as well as potential keynote speakers and publication opportunities such as journal special issues.
Whilst logistic and other support is available from the Steering Group, each conference is a financially stand-alone event. Most major aspects of the conference (submitting and reviewing abstracts, conference registration, storage of papers etc) and now done through an independent web site (with IT support based at the University of Strathclyde). With this in mind, the local organising group is required to budget for £1000 (or non-sterling equivalent) for website and IT support costs.
A decision on the successful bid will be made by the ILPC Steering Group. To aid communication and accountability, a member of the successful team will be co-opted on to the Steering Group (which meets twice a year) for the period of the conference planning.
